When I was in first grade in a tiny one-room mountain schoolhouse, I memorized the twenty-third Psalm. In King James English. And those words – six verses filled with unmatched richness – have always stayed with me through the ups and downs, the blessings and trials of life.
Incredibly, this divinely inspired poetry, written by a shepherd boy turned king, who faced down wild beasts, imposing giants, and fierce enemy armies, is just as meaningful and comforting to us today, thousands of years after it was first penned.
Solid truth that never changes and reminds us that our God is in control. Always and forever.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Oh, friends, let’s fix our eyes on the Shepherd, no matter where He leads us in this rapidly changing world. He is faithful. He is with us, and if we are His, He has promised to never leave us. What comfort. What hope!
